Welcome to the ultimate beginner’s sewing journey! Just like baking a wedding cake, sewing requires mastering the basics first. Our 5-week course is designed to help you build your sewing skills from the ground up, guided by our expert instructors.
Our knowledgeable, friendly, patient teachers will guide you every step of the way. By the end of this course, you’ll have the confidence and skills to tackle more complex projects independently at home, continuing your sewing journey with a solid foundation.
We’ve all been beginners, so we understand how you feel. Our teachers Naomi, Savita, Cathie and Olga will guide you through every step — from setting up your sewing machine to creating your first handmade garment, something you’ll be proud to wear!

Studio Thimbles
what will you learn?
Class 1: Making a Cushion Cover
- Get familiar with your sewing machine, learn about setting up, threading, top thread tension, and bobbins. Practice essential sewing techniques like hemming, pinning, pivoting, and pressing. Complete a cushion cover by the end of the class.
Class 2: Making a Tote Bag
- Solidify your machine setup skills and gain independence in using your sewing machine. Learn additional techniques like creating boxed corners and sewing with the free arm of the machine. Finish a tote bag during this class.
Class 3: Making an Apron
- Introduce sewing along curved lines and changing stitching directions. Reinforce skills from previous classes and promote independent machine setup and use. Complete an apron in this class.
Classes 4 & 5: Making a Skirt with Pockets
- Dive into garment making with a skirt project. Learn to make in-seam pockets, create a paper bag effect, and finish the waistline with an elastic band. Hem your skirt and apply these techniques to future projects.
Course Duration and Schedule
This course runs over 5 weeks with classes held once a week, each session lasting 2 – 2.5 hours. Our small class sizes ensure that each student receives individual attention and support.

I did the T-Shirt Baby Workshop with absolutely zero sewing experience and came out of it with a cute T-shirt for my little baby, but most importantly, I now have the confidence to use a sewing machine (I have never used one before!). Olga was such a pleasant, patient and enthusiastic teacher and provided absolutely everything you needed. Location was easy to find and we were able to finish the workshop on time (2.5 hours) without feeling rushed. I was able to take a copy of the pattern away with me and I went and bought some more fabric straight after to continue making more!

I booked my niece into the tote bag class for her birthday present. She has never sewed before but Olga was the perfect patient encouraging teacher and my niece had the best time and absolutely loved the bag. When we were leaving my niece asked when can we go again! I must add that even though my niece was the only one booked at that time (we saw the students in the earlier class as they were leaving) Olga did not cancel the class and my niece was so lucky to get a one on one private lesson! We did not expect this and it really was going above and beyond. I can’t recommend Olga’s class highly enough. We will be back!

I couldn’t make the 5 week course so I booked a private lesson with Olga. She helped me conquer my fear of starting anything on my sewing machine. I learnt how to load the bobbin, thread my machine, and cut and sew a tote bag in a couple of hours. The lesson flew by, and Olga made it fun and easy. I’m really excited to see what I can make now!

I did the STL2 course with Olga and had a great time! I learned a lot of techniques that I struggled to teach myself at home, and also really enjoyed the social aspect of the class. Olga provides a warm and inviting environment to learn in, and her knowledge is exceptional! The classes are also offered at times that are outside of the normal scope which is great for people who can only learn outside of normal business hours! Highly recommend!

I am a Russian girl with an Aussie heart. I am so grateful to live in the most beautiful country in the world and have an opportunity to follow my sewing passion!
From a young age I was mesmerised by the ability to turn fabrics into unique garments, which often drew comment from admirers for their beauty and character. Below are some hard to find pictures of me in my “me made” garments when I was still studying at school.
You might find it hard to believe that I am a Process Engineer by my degree, but I am a seamstress in my heart! Sewing been my passion through all my life. I was dreaming about becoming a fashion designer.
